Teaching
Having taught Swing and Blues dances for nearly 25 years, and on three continents, John is ever ready to share his passion for dance. He's poured countless hours into his practice and has developed theories on many aspects of dance. He loves guiding students deep into the fundamentals of partnered movement, and encouraging them to figure out how things can be tinkered with.
John is known as a teacher who brings playfulness and humor to each class. His mastery of connection, which he sometimes communicates without words, is foundational to everything he teaches. With an eye formally trained in visual arts, he is able to instantly diagnose problem points in people’s dancing.
John’s teaching philosophy is simple: Meet students where they are, and get them to where they want to be!
Private Lessons
Are Private Lessons Right For You?
I’ve helped people who…
Needed to learn how to dance for their wedding
Wanted a head start before attending group classes
Had a schedule that didn’t align with other local classes
Danced for years, but their new partner was just beginning
Needed help doing moves they ‘learned’ in other classes
Wanted help doing something they saw on the internet
Wanted feedback before entering a competition
Were tired of dancing moves and patterns
Wanted to master their connection skills
Weren’t sure what they needed to improve
Needed to learn at their own pace
Knew everything their local teachers taught
Had questions that other instructors couldn’t answer
Private lessons can be for
all sorts of reasons!

Special Note on Lesson times:
I’m now a stay-at-home dad, and my most reliable baby-free time is during naps, which is currently Noon - 2:30pm.
Private lessons happening outside of that time, will almost certainly include a baby in the room too!
If I need to attend to the baby, I will ‘stop the clock’ on the lesson temporarily and extend the end time at the end so you get your full time. So please block off an additional 30 mins, just in case.
If you’re planning on renting a room or have other time constraints, please let me know and we can talk about how we can navigate potential interruptions to ensure you get your full time.

"I feel very fortunate to have had the opportunity to learn partner dancing skills under the oh-so-skillful, patient and generous guidance of John Lozano over the past few years. His expertise as a teacher in creating lessons which invite and facilitate movement exploration in positive and challenging ways always ensure that I leave our lessons feeling gratified that i spend time and energy dancing."

“My husband and I are so happy that John was able to help us prepare for our first dance at our wedding. John worked with us on both swing and blues and got us comfortable dancing in a short period of time. He is a wonderful instructor, dancer, and very fun to work with. We would love to take more lessons from him in the future and highly recommend him!”

“John taught me to lead like a ninja so that my direction is always clear, effortless, and invisible!”

“The way John approaches dance, partnership, and movement is different than anything else I've ever encountered. Every time I see John, I gain new insights, have dance breakthroughs, and find inspiration for things to explore further myself. I don't know that there is another individual who has been so singularly influential in the way I dance and move.”

“You make dancing seem possible. So much love for what you bring to our community and my personal journey.”

“Before working with John, I was a floundering early-intermediate lindy hop dancer. I had a decent foundation of core moves that I had memorized and could cycle through during a dance, but lacked any sense of spontaneity. Dancing felt mechanistic and I would quickly grow bored after only a few dances. I knew I wanted to grow my improvisational ability, but did not see a path forward that bridged my skillset.
I relayed all of this to John in our first conversation, and he was confident he could help me build up the skills I would need to advance beyond my rut. We worked together for 14 weeks, with John creating a curriculum which focused first on building up confidence in practical skills before shifting (in the latter series of lessons) to more technical aspects of musicality, partner connection, improvisation, and even proprioception. Week-to-week the early series gave me new skills to develop and try out socially. These skills laid the ground work for the later lessons, which gave me cues to work on and think about to develop a collaborative and improvisational connection with other dancers.
Working on partner connection was a highlight that gave dance new depth and provided me with new ways to engage with it. Learning how to build trust during a dance, how to give my partner space to communicate, and how to listen. All of it expanded my dancing from a one-way volley of energy into a shared volley of improvisational calls and responses. By focusing on partner connection, John provided me with skills to build a path beyond the rote and mechanistic dances that left me bored. As my lindy journey has continued, I’ve kept it at the forefront.
Simply put, John made lindy hop fun again. He is an incredible teacher who treated me as a partner in my journey, happily going on tangents that interested me, or patiently approaching issues I was having from as many perspectives as needed until it clicked. His approach to partner connection alone has revitalized my lindy hop. I strongly encourage anyone who is thinking about working with him to do it, and give yourselves a good chunk of time to let the partnership grow. As ours grew throughout the 14 weeks, the lessons started to come full circle and became more and more fruitful. I cherish the partnership we developed and would jump at the chance to work with him again. He is worth it.”
Sometimes words can’t express enough people’s appreciation! In lieu of a written testimonial Linda K., a mosaic artist, expressed her gratitude for her lessons by creating/gifting me this wonderful piece of art.
